For Your Information - Sept 24th Cleveland Independent School District

On For Your Information this week, my guest is Dr. Darrel Myers, Superintendent of Schools for the Cleveland Independent School District (CISD), who spoke to listeners about the events and aftermath of Hurricane Harvey including: the damage to buildings and campuses such as roof, wall, ceiling, flooring, even to Indian Stadium’s new artificial turf field. He also went into some of the losses the community sustained, especially as it had to do with CISD students and their families. Dr. Myers thanked the people of the California community, Manhattan Beach, which put together a seven-truck caravan loaded with school supplies, clothing, footwear, and more for the families of CISD students.

For Your Information - Sept 17th - Trinity River National Wildlife Refuge

On For Your Information this week, my guests are Stuart Marcus, Manager of the Trinity River National Wildlife Refuge (TRNWR), and Jim Carson, COO of the Greater Cleveland Chamber of Commerce (GCCoC) both of whom spoke to the difficulties Hurricane Harvey with its accompanying flood, caused in their efforts to serve the public. Marcus explained the refuge, for all intents and purposes, is currently unusable with floodwaters still covering almost all its land including the raised walkways. He explained he had no way of telling when citizens would once again be able to use the federal property. Carson told listeners about some of the damage suffered by chamber members and general citizens. He said that while the Outdoor Expo was called off due to the disaster, it was being rescheduled. Carson also went into other chamber functions which were canceled but said the Cleveland Music Festival was still scheduled for October.

We talked about Hurricane Harvey, and the Salvation Army’s immediate response to rescue, shelter and feed people during the disaster, and long term plans for recovery. We talked about the Salvation Army clothing centers, addiction recovery program, housing and homeless services. We talked about SA services for youth, the elderly and veterans. We talked about the beginnings of the SA, and the spiritual ministry, as well as the annual Red Kettle program, and how Hurricane Harvey will make Christmas different for so many people this year,.

On For Your Information this week, my guest is Dr. Jeff Burke, the new Superintendent of Schools for Splendora Independent School District (SISD) in Conroe’s Montgomery County who spoke to listeners about what he sees in the future of SISD, recently announced as a 5A District, albeit the smallest one in Texas. Burke went over his experience in the field of education and explained SISD’s location in relation to adjoining districts such as Conroe ISD. He told of the building plans underway as the result of the recent bond election and the predicted continued growth in the district. Dr. Burke spoke to the new administrators on the campuses and who was returning. He reminded listeners to be aware of the school buses returning to roads all over.

We talked about how to start remediating and repairing home damage after Hurricane Harvey, We talked about how to hire professional contractors, and avoid scammers. We talked about the resources available to homeowners, how to deal with insurance and FEMA, and what mistakes to avoid.

On For Your Information this week, my guest is Tom Branch, Manager and Coordinator for Liberty County Office of Emergency Management and Homeland Security, who recapped for listeners to some degree the water levels, extent of the damage caused by the hurricane, and some of the heroic efforts by first responders, as well as just common citizens helping neighbors and strangers. He discussed some of the areas still in difficult straits; possible fatalities resulting from the event; road closures; and where gasoline was still in short supply. Branch also talked about FEMA and other outside agencies that assisted in helping those in need.

For Your Information - Aug 20th - Cleveland Independent School District

On For Your Information this week, my guest is Dr. Darrel Myers, Superintendent of schools for Cleveland Independent School District, who spoke to listeners about some of the activities which have been happening in the district, such as: installing a new artificial-turf field at Indian Stadium as the previous natural-grass field was unable to withstand the heavy use three additional soccer teams put on a field already used by four football teams and two marching bands; the expansion at all the other campuses as well as the new chiller units at Southside; and the construction of eight new tennis courts. He also spoke to the many new temporary buildings now in place due to the 25% increase of student population in the district this year. Additionally, Dr. Myers explained all the current maintenance and construction work is either paid for from existing fund balance savings or from the $35-million bond which passed in Nov. of 2015, and concerning use of the funds from the $80-million bond which passed May 2017 they are currently in the planning stages of construction.

For Your Information - Aug 13th - HPV-Related Cancers Moon Shot program

Guests were Dr. Erich Sturgis co-leader of the HPV-Related Cancers Moon Shot program at MD Anderson, and his patient, Mr. Bert Noojin. The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center has launched an ambitious and comprehensive action plan, called the Moon Shots Program™, targeting several major cancers, including HPV-related cancer. We talked about what HPV is, how it is spread, the cancers it causes, and how important it is to vaccinate boys as well as girls. We also talked about how there is currently no way to screen for throat cancer caused by HPV, and Dr. Sturgis’ new study to find a way to screen men and women for throat cancer caused by HPV.

On For Your Information this week, my guest is Jim Carson, Chief Operating Officer (COO) for the non-profit Greater Cleveland Chamber of Commerce (GCCoC), who spoke to listeners about the Chamber services and activities, in particular major activities happening through October including: a free Aug. 23 class to introduce people/businesses to what the GCCoC does for individuals, businesses and the community titled “Chamber 101”; a few days later, Aug. 26-27, the annual Cleveland Outdoor Expo, now with free admission, which combines a major gun show with all kinds of outdoor-related items, information, and activities such as boats, RVs, hunting leases, ATVs, outdoor outfitting (knives, equipment, clothing, food,), and fun areas for the kids with a rock-climbing wall, ranges for archery and BB-gun marksmanship, as well as a small animal wildlife area; then Sept. 13, the Small Business Association presents Dr. Paul Withey teaching things all business people need to know; and rounding out this busy period, The Cleveland MusicFest, an all-day (ends midnight Oct. 21) with a mix of featured bands including Rock, Gospel, Country, Jazz, Tejano, Zydeco and much more. There will be adult beverages, food trucks, vendors and lots of kid’s events.

On For Your Information this week, my guest is Amanda Brooks, County Extension Agent overseeing 4H and Youth Development, who spoke to listeners concerning how she: deals with students from all seven school districts in the county; is one of four extension agents in the county; and also educates adults in the county. Brooks explained she goes to all the livestock shows where local 4H members participate from local Cleveland Dairy Day and Livestock Show to livestock shows in San Antonio, Dallas, and Houston. She also went into the many different aspects of 4H from home economics and public speaking to auto mechanics and competition robot engineering and construction.

Guest was Bruce Bramlett, Executive Director of Battleship Texas Foundation. We talked about the current state of emergency the 103 year old USS Texas is under, and the future of the historic ship. We talked about last month’s huge leak that endangered the ship, and what is needed to keep from losing her. We talked about the history of the ship, through WWI and WWII, as well as her life now as a museum. We talked about the veterans who served as her crew, as well as the single battle fatality on board. We talked about the educational programs conducted on the ship, and the funding needed to preserve history.

For Your Information - July 23rd - Cleveland First Responders

On For Your Information this week, we informed listeners of a special blood drive sponsored by Cleveland First Responders, the Police and Fire departments, on July 27. After that I brought on my guest, Christine Shippy, a pastor with Covenant of Christ International Ministerial Outreach which is a non-profit organization providing goods and services to those in need in the Greater Cleveland Area. She told listeners: the organization provides items at no charge to the needy; their service center which provides those in need with guidance in dealing with governmental “red tape;” their free clinic which provides many medical services from blood work, to general physicals, to pregnancy tests, even mental health treatment; and their work as a halfway house. Shippy also gave the organization’s contact information and its physical location, and explained what it mission is and the services it provides.

For Your Information - July 23rd - The Buffalo Soldiers National Museum

Guests were Desmond Bertrand-Pitts- and Shelle Fair with The Buffalo Soldiers National Museum. The Houston Museum District is home to the only museum dedicated primarily to preserving the legacy and honor of the African-American soldier in defense of the United States of America from the Revolutionary War to present. We talked about the history of the museum, the xhibits, re-enactments and educational outreach to the community. We talked about the museum’s fundraising, as well as recent expansion into corporate and social event hosting.

For Your Information this week features my guest, Tom Branch, Coordinator for Liberty County Office of Homeland Security, who told listeners what he and his office does to ensure Cleveland and the county is ready in the event of an emergency situation involving the security of the nation. He spoke of his involvement, and coordination, with many agencies including the National Homeland Security office; local law enforcement; the Houston-Galveston Area Council. Branch explained while he and his people are not “first responders,” they provide logistics for the first responders, making sure their needs are taken care of.

For Your Information - July 9th - Marketing and Tourism Director for the City of Cleveland

For Your Information this week features my guest, Freda Joyce, Marketing and Tourism Director for the City of Cleveland, who talked to listeners about the different venues, and each’s amenities, available through her department to the public including the Cleveland Civic Center, Stancil Expo Center, the baseball/softball and football fields at the Eastside Park. She explained people should book their events as early as possible as all venues are booked each remaining weekend in 2017. Joyce also talked about a few of the upcoming events including the Back to School Spectacular scheduled for August where area businesses provide free school supplies to local young people. She said it is a free event, open to the public, and in addition to the school supplies, there will be activities for the youth such has large military vehicles , police , and firetrucks.
